Abandoned Lordsburg High School Should be Preserved

Vacant for more than 30 years, Lordsburg High School was built in 1916, attended by former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and represents a bygone period of economic vitality in this small southwestern New Mexico town. The state Cultural Properties Review Committee wants the school listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Chope's restaurant in southwestern New Mexico is known far beyond state borders. It's now listed in the State Register along with gunfighter and politician Oliver Lee's ranch and a fraternal meeting hall in Galisteo.

App Will Help Preserve Some of Our Oldest Architecture

HPD was one of a few states to receive a Department of the Interior grant to assist underserved communities preserve their heritage. The grant will fund a tribal summit and design of a tablet app three pilot pueblos will use to preserve traditional cores of historic communities.

Albuquerque Locomotive Shops Historic District Established

New Mexico's newest historic district is also the oldest historic industrial complex in the state. The Cultural Properties Review listed 27 acres of the Albuquerque Rail Yard in the State Register and expanded the boundaries of the Downtown Raton Historic District.

St Catherine's Indian School Historic District; Taos' Martinez Property designated historic

St. Catherine's Industrial Indian School campus, the only intact Indian school remaining in New Mexico, was declared an historic district, and a Taos property representing early Hispanic settlement patterns was listed in the State Register by the CPRC.
